Every reader of romantic literature has at least once experienced the magic of Jane Austen’s novels. What makes these novels so popular I would have to say are her characters. Her strong, independent, free thinking women have made history and the male characters are written in such a way that you can’t help but fall in love with them. Now starting with a little brief history. Austen was a English novelist whose realism, and indirect speech have made her one of the most beloved authors in English literature.
Born in 1775, Austen was educated by her father and her brothers. She received little fame and only positive review for her novels because she decided to publish anonymously. Her novels highlight human character and are about the dependence of women on marriage securing a place in society and security.
There is a saying however, how can one write of such a thing without truly experiencing it? However in depths of Austen’s history there is touch of romance. Mr. Thomas Lefroy came into Austen’s world and left her with numerous ideas. They were introduced at a ball and soon began a companionship, however marriage was impractical and Austen was left to live by her pen. This soon became the inspiration for the most romantic of stories.
Despite her whirlwind romance, Jane Austen was proposed to. She accepted the proposal Harris Bigg Wither an unattractive man that she had known as a child. The marriage offered Jane practical advantages because he had a rather large estate, then she could allow her parents to retire. However Jane realized her mistake and withdrew.
Some say that her characters have been a slight reflection of her and her life. That time in history women were not as free spirited and outspoken as her characters. Her early romance with Mr. Lefroy clearly affected her romantic novels. I think of all the characters Jane Austen is most like Elizabeth Bennet. With a sharp tongue and wit. She quickly expressed her feelings on any matter and was very honest. Elizabeth Bennet is one of Jane Austen’s most famous characters.
Her novels include:
- Pride and Prejudice
- Sense and Sensibility
- Mansfield Park
- Emma
- Northanger Abbey
- Persuasion
My favorites have to be Pride and Prejudice, Norhanger Abbey, and Sense and Sensibility. Throughout history Pride and Prejudice has been her most famous work. While she was writing the novel she read it out loud to her family and it soon became an established favorite. Pride and Prejudice tells the story of a strong headed Elizabeth Bennet and a insufferable Mr.Darcy who in the end turns out the perfect after all.
“Elizabeth, having rather expected to affront him, was amazed at his gallantry; but there was a mixture of sweetness and archness in her manner which made it difficult for her to affront anybody; and Darcy had never been so bewitched by any woman as he was by her. He really believed, that were it not for the inferiority of her connections, he should be in some danger.”
- Chapter 10 Elizabeth concerning Darcy.
Northanger Abbey is a satire of a popular gothic novel. It tells tells the tale of Catherine, a young woman who is in no way considered a heroine. However she meets Mr.Tilney and soon everything changes. Written beautifully, the novel is descriptive and at times gives you chills.
But when a young lady is to be a heroine, the perverseness of forty surrounding families cannot prevent her. Something must and will happen to throw a hero in her way.”
-Of Catherine Morland, our heroine to be Chapter 1
Sense and Sensibility tells the story of Elinor and Marianne two sisters with completely different personalities. One sensible and timid while the other loud and expressive. They each have a way of expressing their feelings and ideas. They both fall in and out of love in such a way that forms of Jane Austen’s classics.
“When he was present she had no eyes for anyone else. Everything he did was right. Everything he said was clever. If their evenings at the Park were concluded with cards, he cheated himself and all the rest of the party to get her a good hand. If dancing formed the amusement of the night, they were partners for half the time; and when obliged to separate for a couple of dances, were careful to stand together, and scarcely spoke a word to anybody else. Such conduct made them, of course, most exceedingly laughed at; but ridicule could not shame, and seemed hardly to provoke them.”
- Chapter 11 Describing the intimacy between Marianne and Willoughby.
Austen’s novels have been adapted into films and even a series. There have been many adaptations of Pride and Prejudice along with a mini series. To name a few, the popular film Clueless is an adaption of her popular novel Emma and many other films have been made that concern Jane Austen fanatics. Also a movie was recently released that describes the intimate relationship between Jane Austen and Mr. Thomas Lefroy. Jane Austen’s novels have been the base for many amazing films. With millions reading the popular novels, you just can’t help but fall in love with Austen.
